Thomas Chop, who was born Tomas Cap, lived on Portland Ave. in Chicago as early as 1880. Below are entries from the Chicago City Directory. The address 2927 Portland Ave. is consistent with the census and his voter registration and his death certificate. (2925 is likely an error.) He worked for some time as a laborer before engaging in a career as a candle maker.
You can see in the 1885 listing that his son Joseph Chopp had moved out and was working as a shoe maker at the age of just 15.
