Joseph Chopp's Baptism 1870

Joseph Chopp was baptized Josef Cap on January 30, 1870 at St. Wenceslaus Church.


The parish was founded in 1863 for Bohemian immigrants and the church building was completed in 1966 at the northeast corner of DeKoven and DesPlaines. It survived the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which started just a block away. In 1932, it was moved to the northwest corner of the intersection. It was closed in 1955 and torn down.


The Baptismal Record lists his mother's name as "Alizbeta Trnka." Trnka was not her maiden name, but the name of her first husband.


His father is recorded as Tomas Cap. Under his name is the name of his parents, Joseph Chopp's paternal grandparents. His grandfather's name is listed as "Frt."for "Frantisek,"the Czech version of Frank/Franz. His grandmother's is listed as "Terezie," the Czech version of Theresa.
