John Edward Doherty was named the head buyer for St. Louis of the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company in 1927. He and his wife Myrtle moved with their son John Jr. from Chicago to St. Louis. They soon rented an apartment at 3420 Lawn Avenue near Tower Grove Park. According to the 1930 Census they paid $75 a month. This is where the family lived when Thomas Doherty was born. It is one of the few homes the Doherty's lived in that remains standing today.
